Window Tint Laws in North Carolina: What to Know in 2026

Current North Carolina Tint Rules

In years past, North Carolina has checked window tints during their annual vehicle inspections. This law is no more; these two processes have been separated as of December 1st, 2025. That said, there are still restrictions on window tints that can result in fines and misdemeanor charges if broken. Read on as we explore the current NC window tint laws, what’s changed, and how you can stay legal while still looking great on the roads.

Legal VLT Percentages

Currently, North Carolina has restrictions on tinted windows such that they cannot measure darker than 35% VLT (visible light transmission). There are exceptions to this rule worth looking into that include larger passenger vehicles, ambulances, and a few other specific instances. Also, there are medical exceptions available for those who are photosensitive and have received approval from their physician.

Windshield Tint Restrictions

Beyond just the VLT percentage, the placement of windshield tint is also monitored. These laws mandate that windshield tint cannot extend more than 5 inches below the top of a windshield or below the AS1 line.

The New 2025 Tint Law Change

As mentioned, December 1st, 2025 brings with it new regulations surrounding window tints in North Carolina. Here are the main takeaways:

Inspection and Tint No Longer Connected

The key change this year is that checking window tints is no longer connected to your annual vehicle inspection. The restrictions surrounding the degree of tint remain unchanged, but when the tint is checked has changed.

New Rules for Traffic Stops

At the same time, these law changes also introduce a new requirement for drivers with tinted windows during traffic stops. Now, North Carolina drivers are required to roll down their tinted windows when an officer approaches the vehicle during a traffic stop. This change is said to help officers better understand their situation by seeing the occupants inside a vehicle.

Why This Matters for Drivers

While the specific degree of tint hasn’t changed, drivers will still see these new law changes matter for their lives. The key feature is that window tint inspections are no longer required during your annual vehicle inspection. Said annual vehicle inspection is still required as a whole. Plus, for future traffic stops when having tinted windows, you are required to roll down windows for the officer.

Understanding Tint Percentages

Understanding window tints is important should you want tint on your vehicle. Here are the two major components of window tints:

What 35% Really Means

As previously mentioned, window tint laws revolve around a VLT (visible light transmission) percentage. This simply measures what percentage of visible light is able to penetrate a tint. In North Carolina, keeping the VLT percentage under 35% is crucial to staying legal on the roads.

Medical and Reflective Exceptions

For the most part, under 35% VLT is the rule. For reflective tint, reflections are limited to under 20%. That said, there are some specific medical exceptions that can apply. If you suffer from photosensitivity or need more UV protection, you can sign up for a medical waiver that allows for more windshield tint than would otherwise be allowed. This application needs to be signed by a North Carolina physician and the permit needs renewal every 5 years.

Why Professional Installation Matters

Professional installation for window tints is highly recommended. Not only does professionally installed tint look significantly better on your car, but also lasts longer and makes the tint much easier to remove. What’s more, a professional will have a much better understanding of the laws surrounding window tints to make sure you stay street legal while looking great.

Penalties for Illegal Tint

Penalties for illegal window tints in North Carolina haven’t changed with these December 1st, 2025 updates. Officers are allowed to pull over vehicles for their tints. There, traffic citations can be given out for illegal tints. These violations can result in fines and court costs as well as mandates to remove your tint. For repeat offenses, misdemeanor charges can be filed as well.
